small observations

No recipes today, but a few food observations

—I received my first basket of CSA (community-supported-agriculture) organic vegetables yesterday…It looked great, and the strawberries were awesome!  I plan on pricing it all out at the local market to find out the cost of going local and organic…

—Thanks to my friend Sylvia for this update  showing all of us another example of big business and their ongoing attempt to give us less quality.  Since I am not a huge fan of the USDA/FDA and the way they “protect” us, this bears watching.  To paraphrase,

Their plan is to change the basic formula of chocolate in order to use vegetable fat substitutes in place of cocoa butter, and to use milk substitutes in the place of nutritionally superior milk.  These changes will have adverse effects on the eating, physical and nutritional quality…

—And while I am at it, I may as well bring up this article that the USDA/FDA seems to have been ignoring.  It is a lengthy read, but if one cares about the food you consume, I think it’s well worth your time.  As a hard core pork lover, I will be looking at local farms for my porcine delights !

—As sad and horrible as it is, the pet food fiasco “COULD” be a wake up call for folks to start asking where this stuff comes from, and what the hell is in it…Melamine is toxic and kills living creatures; it also raises protein levels which makes the poison easier to sell…

—And finally, Bourdain has a truly awesome (and funny) rant over at Ruhlman’s blog regarding the latest fiasco at Food Network.  If you don’t watch the station, it won’t mean too much, but if you are like me and  are a former viewer, I think it’s the best read of the week.  I have learned a bit from the older shows, but now all we see Sandra Lee and her kitchen racks…

—Cornish game hens are now marinating—recipe tonight!!
